Nosso Lar was the first work dictated by the spirit André Luiz to the medium Chico Xavier. The book had an enormous impact by revealing the daily life of spirits, who study and work in schools, hospitals and work teams in the spirit colony called Nosso Lar. It also reveals how the spirits of those who have died are affected by the thoughts and feelings of their relatives who are still alive. In this book of Andre Luiz, a doctor who lived in Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century, the reader discovers that life after death is full of activity, and that spirits continue to evolve, learn and improve. Nosso Lar has already been translated into Spanish, English, German, Japanese, French, Greek, Russian and Esperanto.

"In my Father's house are many mansions." (John 14:2) Nosso Lar is one of them. The Umbral is a place of darkness where discarnate souls go following a life of selfish or malevolent endeavors. When these lost souls implore God to help them, their prayers are heard. Spiritual workers come for them and take them to a way station where their etheric body and their soul are cared for by workers dedicated to selfless service for the evolution and redemption of their own souls.

Andre Luiz made many mistakes in his life and spends several years in the Umbral after death. Being at the end of his rope, he prays to God and is taken away to Nosso Lar where he gradually regains his strength and soon starts rehabilitating himself. He learns the virtues of humility and fraternity and becomes a devoted service worker himself. His goodwill and candor make him a very sympathetic and lovable character.

This book teaches that there are innumerable places one can go after death depending on one's level of spiritual evolution. Although I have read a great number of books about spirituality, this book has taught me a lot. It has cleared some of the confusion that I was feeling about accounts by various people of life on the other side that appeared rather contradictory. I highly recommend this wonderful book as well as "And Life Goes On" by the same author.

Nosso Lar edition by Francisco Candido Xavier Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Coming from a lifetime of study of many spiritual paths, from Christianity to Zen, this book landed on me in diverse ways. Often I was profoundly moved, and highlighted many deep statements of insight. At other times, it did not live up to expectation. The chapter on how to listen completely disappointed its heading. I definitely read it as allegory, the setting being in a non-carnate world with very carnate settings to correspond to the central character's previous life on earth. In the end, I found it a worthwhile read.
"Our Home" is a level of the afterlife where learning, awakening, and growth take place after death. It is above the lower levels of purgatory and hell and below more highly ascended levels. The channeled details of the new challenges of life after death remind us that our journey is ongoing. Considering the lessons learned by André, a doctor who has spent some years in "the Umbral" for his selfish life on earth, and who is rescued from this purgatory through the intervention of passionate loved ones, the reader can consider his or her life as it is being lived now. There is real value in this exercise, and an exhortation to a more aware and considered life, not simply for the reasons of a better afterlife, but in recognition of the inextricable and seamless relationship between the two and for the pure intention of growth in divine love. The movie "Astral City" (in Portuguese with English subtitles) gives some lush and indelible visual and emotional impressions, but you will want to read and reread the astonishing details, albeit it couched in flowery and phlegmatic prose. I was able accept it uncritically though as the writing itself seemed to come from the heavens.
Compelling description of the afterlife. I first saw the movie, Astral City, which I unequivocally loved-- the novel was much more sectarian and rigidly Catholic with a lot of emphasis on departmental regulations and rules, and a judgemental bit about a soul who had performed abortions while on earth. But the chapter that dealt with the main character's redemption made the flaws worth enduring.
All of Chico Xavier's books given to us through him from the Spirit World are revolutionary and are helping us to remember who we are are why we came here to planet earth. Thank You Chico!!
Watched the movie 3 times and almost hesitated in buying the book because of that but glad I did. It goes into far more detail and is definitely worth the read. It is obvious however, that this author and the plane upon which he lives seems to deal only with those Brazilian souls. The only quibble I have is that from what I have learned in a lifetime of this study, is that when you pass over, you lose all physical disabilities and pain. This distinction may be different however in the purgatory region. I hope that this does not give the wrong impression that one still has to suffer physical pain after death. No matter your level of experience, everyone can come away with pearls of wisdom from this book. Reads like a novel, very absorbing, offers a lot of knowledge, I have it underlined with comments in the margins. Will refer to it again and again. Is not a religious book per se but it is obvious that they base their teaching on Jesus, however, these principles apply to all religions.
Andre Luiz was a doctor in the physical. He then passed on and described his experiences on the other side.

I also recommend watching the DVD Astral City [Blu-ray] which tells the same story in a very beautiful way making use of brilliant colors. There are subtitles - I was a little concerned in the beginning when there wasn't a setup option on the main menu to turn subtitles on but they were there automatically in the movie.
I became interested in Andre Luiz/Francisco Xavier's books after seeing the film "Nosso Lar" (which I would also recommend.) What I found interesting about this book and "The Messengers" (I haven't read "And Life Goes On" yet) is how much like the physical world the spirit world is as described in these books. The explanations as to why this is so are also intriguing. From time to time I found the language a bit frustrating - for example, the narrator would say something like, "My guide recognized my unasked question and responded with a significant hand gesture," and not give any further explanation. I don't know whether this is a problem in the translation, or perhaps something inherent in the structure of the Portuguese language, but overall, it's a minor flaw when considering the pleasures and insights offered by these novels. I look forward to reading "And Life Goes On."
