Phillip Black is one of Pittsburgh's most effective private investigators, although these days he usually opts to take simpler cases. When Lydia Agnew shows up at his door, afraid that her fiancé is unfaithful, he's glad to make easy money by following her rich, spoiled betrothed for a week. He doesn't expect his occupation to be outed to Edgar Gold, nor for the engaged beau to display his true preferences to the detective by flirting with another man. Edgar confuses him further by hiring Black for his own ends, believing that Lydia is working with someone else to kill Edgar. Black thinks nothing of adding the paranoid kid's easy case to his workload, taking pity on the lonely fiancé. But as he works he finds himself drawn deeper into the Agnew family, and only begins to think he's in over his head when Edgar attempts to turn their relationship into something less than professional. Caught between Lydia Agnew's sultry cousin and the seductive Edgar Gold's claws, Black struggles to keep himself focused on his original cases. As he tries to escape unscathed he discovers that Edgar's paranoia may not be entirely unwarranted, and that whoever is after the kid seems to have set their sights on the meddling Black as well.

I do wish that the synopsis had mentioned what time period this story was going to be taking place in. Not that it was a bad thing, but when you figure the story takes place in current times, and then the PI charges $6 a day for his services and there's mention of Prohibition and flappers, it tends to throw you for a loop.The story, otherwise, was decent. Nothing mind-blowing to set it apart from other authors, and I came across several grammar and spelling errors throughout the course of the story. It didn't feel like the author gave much effort into fleshing out the characters, so none of them were really memorable.
I would recommend this book to someone who wants a quick read for a rainy afternoon.
