Book One of Jay Allan's Refugees Series

Terrence Compton is one of Earth’s greatest admirals, a warrior almost without equal. Alongside his oldest friend and brilliant colleague, Augustus Garret, he and his forces saved Earth from invasion by the robotic legions of the First Imperium’s insane computer Regent.

There is just one problem. The First Imperium was held back by the disruption of the sole warp gate connecting the two domains…and Compton and 300 of his ships are trapped on the wrong side, surrounded by the Regent’s vast fleets and cut off from Earth.

Pursued by their deadly enemy, Compton and his fleet must flee into the darkness of unexplored space, seeking safety…and ultimately a new home. Their journey will take them deep into the heart of the First Imperium, to the silent, windswept worlds where the ancient race that built the Regent once dwelled…and uncover the lost secrets of its disappearance 500,000 years ago.

Into the Darkness Crimson Worlds Refugees Book 1 eBook Jay Allan

Before you start this title, please realize it is a spinoff / continuation of a much longer series by the author. You need to read Marines: Crimson Worlds I first, and all of the other books in that series, or this episode won’t make much sense with the background story and characters.

If you were a fan of the Crimson Worlds series, I believe you will like this one. Compton and his stranded forces continue to flee and fight the units of the First Imperium. The battle scenes are realistic, and the future technologies are something you can wrap your hands around and believe without calling “bull” as you can in many SF titles. The author also does a good job of getting you emotionally involved with his characters as you get to appreciate new characters yet feel the pain – and get a little depressed – as characters die off in the continuing battles.

I picked this up for 99 cents during a Kindle promotion vs. its normal price of $3.99: if you have enjoyed previous episodes of the Crimson Worlds series, you will certainly get more than $3.99 worth of entertainment value out of this one.

Into the Darkness Crimson Worlds Refugees Book 1 eBook Jay Allan Reviews

This spinoff will have you on the edge or your favorite reading chair. I found it hard to put this book down and go to work, it's that good.

I won't be adding any spoilers, but I do recommend that anyone looking at this book give it a read.
The plot was a little foreseeable, but the writing was excellent as usual. Even though you can anticipate the major plot actions, the writing and character development force you to care about them and wonder who is going to make it through.
A smal error but one an author as good as Jay Allan shouldn't make. It detracts from his otherwise brilliant story telling (one equal to Heinlein, Clark, Even Asimov's abilities ) .
The quote is NOT "Once more INTO the breach".
The s peech is “Once more UNTO the breach, dear friends, once more
Or close the door with English dead."

(from Henry V, spoken by King Henry)
It's a Jay Allan book. Nothing more needs to be said. As always it satisfies and keeps the reader engaged. A science fiction novel with real science and military writing. It also retains the ability to keep the reader engaged with the characters and to care about them. And most of all it teaches lessons about honor and courage.
Humans lost in space fighting a seemingly suicidal battle against an army of robots with superior technology. Gets off to a fast start and keeps the pace pretty much to the end. The humans are believable. It is a story about the indomitable spirit, the intellectual ingenuity and the raw courage of humans when faced with seemingly overwhelming odds. I give this book my own rating of E+. That means entertaining with a good dose of adrenaline. The book is part of a series but stands well on its own.
I am sorry I bought the series up front. What a disappointment.

The story is a rehash of Battlestar Galactica - small fleet desperately fighting against overwhelming odds as they race towards hopeful salvation. The main problem of the series is the massive, truly staggering amount of repetitious prose. All 3 books have multiple characters regurgitating the same feelings/thoughts/dialog ad nauseam. It's mind boggling the volume of pages that simply repeat what we have already read 5/10/20/50 (literally) times. There are actually pages where a main character repeats his thinking almost verbatim one paragraph to the next - like the author left off writing at night, then didn't review where he'd quit before plowing back into it.

The kicker is that this story could have been great. It looks to me like the author had the outline for a great book and then like modern movies, he decided to turn it into a 3 book series to make more money. The problem is that he has nothing to say so he just repeats, repeats, repeats, repeats...........................

The Series
5% dialog
20% moving the story along
By the time you get to the 3rd book - 75% cliche characters repeating ruminations/dialog - OVERWHELMING!
Into the Darkness (Crimson Worlds Refugees) is the first book in the spin-off series of the Crimson Worlds series. It follows on from Hell's Heart which is book six in the Crimson Worlds series. So before you start this book be sure to read the previous six books or you won't have the background story of the characters and plots. Into the Darkness picks up directly after Cain has detonated the bomb that damages the warp gate thus preventing the First Imperium from entering the human sphere. Admiral Comption and his refugee fleet manage to extricate themselves from the overwhelming forces of the First Imperium and goes on the run into the heart of the empty worlds of the Imperium. With the robot forces of Imperium searching for the refugees, Compton must make hard choices that not everyone in the Fleet is happy about. Into the Darkness was a heart-stopping story that had me on an emotional roller-coaster as favourite characters risked life and limb to fight against the superior forces of the Imperium. If there is one thing Allan is good at is providing an all to realistic portrayal of war - even characters that you become invested in can be lost and it reinforces what people who serve must face in war. Comrades are lost and there is no guarantee that you or your friends will make it home - this is the mathematical certainty of war. Into the Darkness tells a taut, all to human story of people who must watch comrades die, deal with the fact they are never going home, incompentency that endangers the Fleet, somehow strive to have hope when the odds aren't good, find the determination to endure, deal with mutiny as a result of fear and then there are the heroes who sacrifice themselves for the greater good. As a bonus readers will start to unravel the mystery of what happened to the long dead humanoids of the Imperium which salves my curiousity and need to know everything about the extended Crimson Worlds universe......nice one, Jay )
