This book is meant for middle school-age children, though adults may enjoy it as well. The plot is engaging, the characters are likeable, and the book is a good quick read for those older than the recommended ages. Hopefully there is more to come from J.A. Clark in the near future.

Ector and Meric live in a small, unremarkable village. They live ordinary human lives with only the Harvest Festival at the end of the season to look forward too. The Harvest Festival marks the villages time to bring in their crops, but it also brings in outsiders. Ever since Old man Bodocks brew started making people glow, people from all over the valley have been visiting to enjoy the magic. With every passing year the brews grow stronger and more in variety. With every passing year the towns fame grows, and the attention reaches out further and further into the land. Even unwanted attention. Ector and Meric have been reining champions for the Hoppy Brew Games and they are determined to once again hold the title. But Ector realizes the games might not be the most important thing. He knows somethings off this year. The newcomers aren't joning in the festivities like usual. Hooded figures lurk in the dark, staying towards the edges of the crowd. Ectors life gets turned upside down as he races for his survival, and for the survival of his friends.
This fantasy story is filled with suspense, intrigue, and Elves. It carries the fate of an old womens last prophecy that fortells the fate of the human and elvish worlds. This fate will be determinded by the life of a young half-elf, half-human boy and the powers he weilds. Will the scales tip? Or will balance across the species finally be balanced? Can Ector survive? Or will this prophecy be the end of him and all of human kind?
I liked this story. It was interesting. It was fast paced. I like the powers the elves held and I liked how they were determined in each person. I thought the writing flowed really well. I was a little confused in the first chapter with what exactly was happening, but if you continue on with the story it all becomes very clear what unfolded. I enjoyed the characters. I liked their personalities. The three main human characters reminded me of the Harry Potter Trio, or the Percy Jackson Trio. They had the same gender ratio. (Two boys one girl.) I liked the Elves as well, Dalis and Quamas being my favorite. I thought the genre was similar to Eragon and Harry Potter. Especially in the beginning with the Harvest Festival Games they remindedme of the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The magic and the world was similar to the world and magic of Eragon. (Although there aren't any dragons in the first book.) I thought the Point of Veiw was very refreshing. As a Female reader who loves Girl Power, its getting really boring allways reading from a female point of view . I like how this story was told through the eyes and mind of a young male. I loved the adventure that they followed. The threats of the Dark Elves didn't seem as threatening as I think they were supposed too. I think the "friendly" Elves posed more of a threat. I overall loved this story it was a great fantasy read. If you like Eragon, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, any of those types of fantasy storys, you will most definatly love this.
Joseph Clark has produced a truly fascinating world peopled by, well people, and elves! While the first chapter or so plods a bit, it will not be long before you are fully absorbed into the world he has created, and may even wish you could be part of the story. An ancient halfling (half elf, half human) guarded by Dalis, an elf warrior, produces a prophecy which, until her life is nearly ended, she hides from the Elvish High Council. After revealing it to them, she writes the prophecy out for her protector. When evil elves kill the woman and his copy of the prophecy gets partially burned, Dalis goes on the run, but also on the lookout for a child--the subject of the prophecy. The child is found by both the elvish warrior and his evil counterparts. After a festival, Ector, the child of prophecy and two friends run from the evil elves, led by Dalis. Thus begins the quest for the rest of the prophecy, and the potential for peace and union between humans and elves.
The story will remind you of the classic tales of heroic quests and fantastic adventures from Tolkein, C.S. Lewis, and farther back to Malory and Homer. There is nothing new under the sun, according to Solomon, yet Clark beautifully retells the most classic of stories in a familiar yet fun and fanciful setting. It will seem as fresh and novel as the first bloom of your favorite flower. It is well worth checking out Clark's website ([...]) for a peek at the entire six-book series he expects to produce. If this is a sample of how well the others will turn out, then his readers (I would say fans -- you will be one once you enjoy the first book) are in for a very special treat. My only regret is that I have finished the first book, and the second is not ready. There are very few authors whose books I would read a second time (Tolkein, Lewis, Bradbury are the very few), but I am already planning to read this volume again when I know the next one is ready.
After reading my reviews for books by Tolkein and Lewis, Mr. Clark offered me a free copy of the book in return for my promise to review it. I was skeptical. I checked out his website and agreed to give it a try. I am happy I did. If you would be happy to be a citizen of Narnia or live in a hole in the Shire, or if you ran the cornfields of the Midwest in the pre-rocket age you will enjoy journeying from Ector's city of Cleargar to the Eastern Elven Circle. Develop your own magic; this is a book well worth chewing on -- but only eight times! Confused? It’s there in the tale.
I have always loved fiction and, "An Old Woman's Prophecy", is a book well worth reading. Quite an easy read yet engaging enough for the pre-teen or the over sixty just looking for a little diversion! ☺
